Brighton Press publishes books, field guides, and maps that explore and interpret the landscape history of the Victoria-centred region. Suburban Oak Bay, a municipality located on the Greater Victoria’s eastern, ocean-fronting rim, is the focus of two recent publications.
The newly-published, award winning book, Imagining Uplands: John Olmsted’s Masterpiece of Residential Design (2016) is available from Victoria-area bookstores or by ordering on-line from Brighton Press (see orders page). The Uplands Field Guide (2014) offers maps, images, and an architectural survey of this historic neighbourhood.
Other publications are in preparation, including a field guide that explores the heritage of land development, residential architecture, and town planning in suburban Oak Bay.
Imagining Uplands was awarded First Prize in the “Prose Non-Fiction” category for books published in 2016 by the Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. The book was designed by Lara Minja of Lime Design, based in Victoria, BC.
Imagining Uplands is a recipient of a 2017 writing award from the Hallmark Heritage Society of Victoria.
